Daily-to-Yearly Maintenance Schedule for CNC Machines

Daily-to-Yearly Maintenance Schedule for CNC Machines

A maintenance checklist from shift start to annual geometry checks to reduce unplanned downtime.

Most CNC machine failures are not sudden; they are the result of wear that develops over weeks. Planned maintenance catches this process early. The schedule below is a starting point for a typical machining center or lathe; check the machine manual for exact intervals.

Daily (start of shift)

  • Check way-lube and coolant levels; measure coolant concentration with a refractometer (6-8%).
  • Verify air pressure (6 bar) and lubricator level.
  • Clean tool-holder tapers and the spindle nose; clear chips from covers and wipers.
  • Glance at the alarm history.

Weekly

  • Clean the chip conveyor and coolant filters.
  • Inspect wipers and bellows for damage.
  • Skim the tramp-oil layer from the coolant tank.

Monthly

  • Clean or replace electrical cabinet fan filters.
  • Check table and vise surfaces for impact marks.
  • Check central lubrication lines for blockages and leaks.

Every 6 months

  • Measure ball screw and linear guideway backlash.
  • Check hydraulic oil level and pressure; take an oil sample.
  • Have spindle vibration and temperature analysis done.

Yearly

  • Geometry and positioning verification (laser interferometer, ball-bar).
  • Drain and completely renew the coolant tank.
  • Back up parameters and apply control software updates.

When does a maintenance contract make sense?

For businesses with two or more machines, three-shift operation or no in-house maintenance technician, an annual contract noticeably reduces unplanned downtime. Under the contract, oil and filter changes, geometry verification and spindle analysis follow a planned schedule, and you gain priority response when problems occur. For small single-machine shops, doing the daily and weekly routines yourself and having geometry checked once a year is often enough.

Common mistakes

  • Topping up coolant without measuring concentration
  • Neglecting the air-line dryer; moisture harms the pneumatic and lubrication systems
  • Mounting tools without cleaning the spindle taper, which seriously shortens spindle bearing life
  • Resetting alarms without investigating the cause

Keep records

Record every maintenance task with the date and hour meter. Records make life easier both during warranty claims and ISO 9001 audits. Torvan Makina customers receive maintenance reports digitally.
